I. Discovering Hidden Treasure
As a brand, we follow all things Americana. And then scrolling through Instagram one day, we stumbled across a post from @PlayOKAntiques. It was a pile of baseball gloves like we’ve never seen before. Instantly, we were intrigued and without knowing what to expect, we direct messaged the person behind the post. After a few emails and phone calls, we knew we had to see this collection for ourselves. If the picture we saw was worth 1,000 words, then seeing these gloves in person was going to be worth thousands more. But even more than the gloves themselves, for us, it was about meeting the curator behind those gloves. So the first chance we got, we boarded the plane for Connecticut.
II. Meeting the Legend
After a short 10 minute ride from our hotel, we showed up to Brett’s backwoods Connecticut home with an eagerness we hadn’t experienced in quite a while, and we knocked. After 10 minutes with him, we knew he was everything we hoped for and more. For hours we listened to him as he took us through his incredible collection of vintage sports equipment—none more impressive than his baseball gloves. It was obvious that we were sitting at the feet of a true historian. Brett Lowman is the world’s foremost authority on vintage baseball equipment in the world; just as his father before him. Someday, it will be his sons.
III. Repurposing History
After sitting with Brett, we believed even more strongly that each glove has a story to be told. But sadly, so many gloves sit lifeless in garages and closets across America. So, at Fielder’s Choice Goods, we bought over 1,000 of those vintage gloves from Brett and turned them into functional products that breath new life into the stories of old.
